Born in Canton, Ohio, October 6, 1934.

My father was an unskilled laborer and we moved frequently as he found better jobs.

I began school in Steubenville, Ohio. Then my parents heard from my mother’s family in Detroit, Michigan that good paying jobs were plentiful in Detroit because of the war industries there. We moved there just before the race riots of 1943 which left a lasting impression on me. My father found work with a wholesale grocery firm and stayed with them the rest of his working life.

I went to public schools in Detroit, graduating from Cooley High School in January 1953.
